next week the rock will celebrate their 20th anniversary and pastor ron will pass the baton to pastor bryan as senior pastor of the rock.
during weeks one and two of our series, “to make a difference”, pastor ron preached about their family’s journey to be obedient to god’s word. leaving thier comfortable life in florida, they moved to a small unknown coastal town in north carolina to establish a dream. pastor norma agreed on to come on one historic condition… “that we make a difference.” those words have resounded within these walls throughout the years and have become a steady undercurrent propelling the purpose of this church.
today pastor bryan spoke of our future purpose. what a timely example the men’s olympic relay proved to be as pb preached one of his best messages ever…
- we’re not looking back…. we’re running full steam ahead as the baton is being passed from one amazing leader to another;
- no leg of this race we are running is more or less important than the other. we need the past as much as we need our present and future;
- the rock is a team. each week we come together bringing our neighbors, our co-workers and people we have come in contact with that need god. we hand the baton to our leadership to bring the word. leadership hands the baton back to us as we go back out into our community to reinforce and live out the word in our hearts;
- the last thing we want is to train, and dream and sacrifice…. only to drop the baton. we must constantly keep our eye on the task at hand… “to make a difference”.
that was an astoundingly simple summary to a really great word. but, i’m in a little of a hurry. i have a meeting with my team in 45 minutes to talk about our strategy for the race…. and pass yet another baton.
next week… go grab the podcast and listen.
i love my team. i love my church.
i love my city.
let’s run.

my very good friend, julie sends me a birthday card, absolutely, without fail, every single year. she has known me since birth. so, i have gotten exactly 38 birthday cards from her as of today. it is the one piece of correspondence that keeps us in touch. it makes me smile each year. i love her so much for many reasons… but this one simple annual act of kindness is remarkable to me and speaks volumes about the kind of woman and friend she is.
so, this year (today) i open the mailbox excited to see a little corner of red hallmark paper, adorned with the telltale flowered return address label poking out from underneath all of the bills and circulars. my heart was suddenly happy. pushing all the other superfluous stuff to the back of the box i reach for the only piece of mail i look forward to all year. i quickly flipped it over to tear open my birthday surprise when suddenly – - i was forced to STOP….
“DO NOT OPEN UNTIL AUG. 19!!
are you serious?!?!?!
[sigh].
really?!?!?
[hmmm].
how old am i now?!?!?! i still have to wait?!?!?
[hrmph].
evidently it’s true. you are really, truly only as old as you feel.
so, i’d like to announce that tomorrow… i turn 6 years old.
so, she’s in raleigh… i’m in wilmington…
what would you do?
